Education and Training

The Centre for Education and Development (CED) provides a range of education opportunities for all our staff.  We coordinate educational sessions, both internally and externally, and can develop an education program that meets your organisation’s needs. The Education Department is an Authorised Provider of Endorsed Courses (Royal College of Nursing Australia) and can allocate Continuing Nurse Education (CNE) points to the education we coordinate and provide.

Specialised educational programs
Post registration courses for nurses and other health professionals

We have courses to suit all levels of learning: tertiary linked courses, vocational and short courses:

  • Certificate in Palliative Care Nursing – a program of learning for registered nurses working in inpatient or community settings where they have contact with people with a life-threatening condition. The course aims to develop clinical skills in assessment and communication, introduce participants to the notion of critical thinking and/or enhance existing skills in critical thinking, explore current issues in palliative care and promote reflection on clinical practice.
  • Plan for and provide care services using a palliative approach – for registered and enrolled nurses currently working in palliative care, cancer care, aged care and other clinical specialties where they have contact with people with a life-threatening progressive illness and/or a normal ageing process.
  • Deliver care services using a palliative approach – for enrolled nurses, allied health, personal care attendants, assistants in nursing, support workers and field officers who wish to apply a palliative approach in the care of those with a life-threatening illness and/or a normal ageing process.
  • Advanced Palliative Care Skills - covers complex symptoms such as pain, bowel obstruction, terminal respiratory secretions and delirium. Pharmacology in palliative care, syringe drivers and pumps and subcutaneous medications are also explored.

External education
In addition to the above education we offer health professionals and carers access to information on palliative care and progressive neurological disorders. Seminar and training formats are available in all health disciplines with a strong emphasis upon symptom management and case management. Through telehealth technology, health professionals in rural and remote locations can access clinical information through a training or workshop environment. Education provided through this service is designed in consultation with the requesting agency and customised to the needs of your organisation. Please contact us for more information.
