Calvary Health Care Bethlehem Research Ethics & Ethics Committee
The Calvary Health Care Bethlehem Research Ethics & Ethics Committee was established to:
- act as a forum for consideration of research proposals from an ethics perspective to ensure methodology, approach and the aims of research are consistent with the aims of Calvary Health Care Bethlehem
- to discuss and recommend action with respect to ethical issues, both actual and possible at Calvary Health Care Bethlehem
- to consider ethical implications of all proposed research to ensure best practice in accordance with the LCMHC philosophy and relevant research guidelines outlined in the Code of Ethical Standards for Catholic Health and Aged Care.

Should there be no research applications for consideration at any one meeting, the meeting will be cancelled and a notice sent to committee members.

Rosalie Jones - Chair
Rosalie Jones has spent a lifetime in education, especially Catholic education in Victoria. She was Principal of Star of the Sea College, Gardenvale for 15 years and is currently Manager, Secondary Services, Catholic Education Office Melbourne.
Rosalie was Chair of the Social Studies Field of Study Committee which introduced Religion and Society into the Victorian curriculum at VCE level. One of the units for the study is Ethics, which has been taught in many schools for almost two decades now.
She has degrees from Sydney and Monash University and is currently enrolled in a Master’s program at the University of Melbourne.
Dr Jane Fischer - CALVARY HEALTH CARE BETHLEHEM Chief Executive Officer/Medical Director
Jane commenced her career as a general practitioner and has more than 20 years experience in the palliative care field in rural, remote and metropolitan settings. Jane commenced at Calvary Health Care Bethlehem as Clinical Director of Palliative Care in 2001 and has been in her current role as CEO/Medical Director since 2007.
Jane has been on the Board of Palliative Care Victoria (PCV) since 2001 and Chair since 2004. She is a Palliative Care Australia Council member and has been on a number of state-based advisory committees in her role with PCV and is currently the Chair of the Victorian Palliative Medical Training Advisory Committee.
Her areas of expertise include leadership, strategy and service development.
Jane holds a Bachelor of Medicine, Diploma of Child Health and Fellowship Australian Chapter of Palliative Medicine.
Julia Trimboli – CALVARY HEALTH CARE BETHLEHEM Director of Mission
Director of Mission, Julia Trimboli is a vibrant educator with a special interest in social justice. Her academic qualifications and life experiences have bought her to the work of Mission in Catholic Health Care. Julia is skilled at forming and educating staff in faith based organizations. She was a member of the first cohort to undertake the Catholic Women’s Interfaith Fellowship, an academic and formation course established to equip women for leadership. Julia’s academic qualifications include: a Bachelor of Arts, a Graduate Diploma of Secondary Education, Post Graduate Qualifications in Human Rights and Social Justice and has completed a Masters of Arts (Theology).
Dr Susan Mathers - Clinical Director of Neurology, CALVARY HEALTH CARE BETHLEHEM and Consultant Neurologist at Monash Medical Centre
Susan is a member of the Motor Neurone Disease Research Institute of Australia, the MND Research Tissue Bank, and a founding member of the Australian MND Register. Her main interests are in the management of chronic progressive neurological diseases and models of care.
Dr Jim Howe
Dr Howe trained in neurology and geriatrics in the UK before coming to Australia to live in 2006. Currently he works part-time at Calvary Health Care Bethlehem and Southern Health in the fields of neuropalliative rehabilitation and cognitive impairment. He also teaches medical students at Monash University, Deakin Rural School and Monash Rural Medical Schools in ethics, law and professional development as well as neurology. He has UK experience in high profile law and medical ethics cases.
Revd Kevin McGovern
Catholic priest Kevin McGovern is the Director of the Caroline Chisholm Centre for Health Ethics. He researches and writes on bioethical issues particularly for the Chisholm Health Ethics Bulletin. From 1997 to 2006, he lectured in ethics and moral theology at the Brisbane College of Theology. He has served on six Human Research Ethics Committees, including the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital HREC (2000 to 2006) and the Cabrini Health Care HREC (from 2007). He was recently a member of the Australian Government’s 2011 Human Cloning and Embryo Research Acts Review Committee.
Tony Ryan
Tony Ryan has been involved with Calvary Health Care Bethlehem for 32 years since his appointment as a Commissioner on the Health Commission in 1978. When he left health and hospital administration to become Chairman of the Liquor Licensing Commission in 1988, Tony was free to accept an invitation from Sister Marie Hedigan LCM to join the Board of Management at Bethlehem (and the Ethics Committee). He was Chairman of the Board (1993 to 2000) and Chairman of the Ethics and Research Committee (1993 to 2008). Tony was a Judicial Registrar in the Industrial Relations and Federal Courts of Australia from 1994 to 2000 and is presently a member of the Liquor Licensing Panel of Victoria. He is the legal representative on the CHCB Research Ethics and Ethics Committee.
Shannon Thompson – CALVARY HEALTH CARE BETHLEHEM Director Clinical Services
Shannon Thompson joined Calvary Health Care Bethlehem in 2003 as a community palliative care nurse, and commenced in her role as Director of Clinical Services in 2008.
Shannon has extensive experience in health care settings and brings to her role a wide and varied background, as well as a passion and commitment to the development of a skilled and innovative workforce and to the delivery of quality consumer-focused care.
Shannon currently holds a position on the Southern Metropolitan Region Palliative Care Consortium and has recently been appointed as a member of the LCMHC National Palliative Care Collaborative steering group.
Des McCarthy
Des has extensive experience in the development and management of office buildings, hotels, shopping centres, and industrial properties. At various times he has been Chairman of subsidiary companies and investment funds, Chairman of three “five star” hotels and President/Chairman of the Property Council of Australia. He retired as Director, Property Division with Telstra Corporation, which is responsible for 10,000 properties valued at $4.5b.
Des was a member of the CHCB Board for approximately 10 years, Chair of the Board’s Planning/Works Committee during the same period, a volunteer with the hospital’s Bereavement Services for 21 years, and a member of the Research Ethics & Ethics Committee for the past 20 years.
Cr Margaret Esakoff
Margaret is married with two adult children and one grandchild. She has previously run a small business with her husband and has vast experience in all aspects of business administration. She is strongly involved in the community, having been a member of the Glen Eira City Council since 2003, serving as Mayor in 2004-05 and 2006-07, Deputy Mayor in 2007-08 and presently. She is a local volunteer, is Vice-President of the Management Committee of Community Information Glen Eira, and is part of the ‘Meals on Wheels’ team, delivering meals locally.
